Mobile connectivity and payments in Lebanon- 2026

Staying connected and paying on the go in Lebanon has become noticeably easier in 2026, especially for travelers moving between cities and main tourist areas, though a mixed approach still works best.

Mobile connectivity and eSIMs

eSIMs are now a practical and reliable option for travelers to Lebanon. Both Alfa and Touch support eSIM activation, offering full local service including voice calls and mobile data. Activation with local operators is typically done in person and requires ID.

In parallel, international travel eSIM providers offer data-only prepaid plans that can be purchased and installed before arrival, allowing visitors to connect immediately upon landing. Network coverage is generally strong in Beirut, coastal cities, and major towns, with more variable performance in remote mountain areas.

Digital payments and mobile pay

Paying in Lebanon in 2026 is more straightforward than in recent years, particularly in cities and tourist hubs, but cash still plays an important role. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted at hotels, mid-range and upscale restaurants, cafés, shopping areas, museums, and tourism-related. American Express acceptance remains more limited.

A major shift began mid 2025 with the official launch of Google Pay. Through Google Wallet, Android and Wear OS users can now make contactless mobile payments at compatible terminals. Support expanded through late 2025 and continues into 2026, especially in supermarkets, cafés, hotels, and newer retail outlets. Apple Pay is still not widely supported, making Google Pay the most reliable mobile wallet option locally. As always, mobile payments depend on both the issuing bank and the merchant’s payment terminal.

Cash and ATMs

Cash remains part of daily life. Lebanese pounds are the default currency for many transactions, while U.S. dollars are still widely accepted in tourism-focused settings. Traditional markets, taxis, small guesthouses, beach operators, and roadside vendors often operate cash-only. ATMs are widely available and remain the most reliable way to access cash, though withdrawal limits and fees vary.

Traveler takeaway

In 2026, expect good mobile connectivity, growing use of eSIMs, strong card and contactless acceptance in cities, increasing support for Google Pay on Android, and continued reliance on cash for smaller, local transactions. Carrying a mix of digital and cash options remains the smoothest way to travel across Lebanon.
