Discover Tannourine’s Hidden Marvels: Exploring the Ancient Wonders of Baatara Gorge
In the highlands of Batroun District, about 71 kilometers from Beirut, lies the village of Balaa, a part of the Tannourine region. This village is home to one of the world’s oldest and most breathtaking natural wonders—the Baatara Gorge Sinkhole, also known as Balou’ Balaa.
Baatara Gorge: The Timeless Wonder of Tannourine
A premier tourist destination, both locally and internationally, this geological marvel attracts adventurers and hikers, as it sits along the Lebanon Mountain Trail. Featuring caves, tunnels, and natural pools, it is also home to vibrant bird species and offers unique scientific study opportunities due to its distinct ecosystem. Even in winter, visitors brave the snow and cold to witness its awe-inspiring beauty.
Reaching Baatara Gorge is a scenic journey. The village of Balaa lies next to the picturesque town of Laqlouq, where I have shared past adventures. The site is accessible via the Byblos–Annaya–Ehmej route or the Batroun–Tannourine road, passing by the charming village of Douma along the way.
Tannourine: A Land of History, Heritage, and Natural Beauty
The towns of Tannourine stretch across 90 square kilometers, divided into Tannourine Fawqa and Tannourine Tahta. Steeped in history and heritage, they boast Phoenician, Greek, and Crusader relics, alongside ancient churches, monasteries, red-tiled houses, and a landscape of breathtaking natural beauty.
Tannourine: A Land of Ever-Changing Beauty
Through the seasons, Tannourine's rivers flow, and its nature tells a thousand stories—transporting you to the lush jungles of Africa in summer and the icy landscapes of the Arctic in winter.
Its abundant water sources, both flowing and underground, have fueled agriculture and orchard cultivation, particularly apples. Adding to its natural wealth, the Tannourine Cedars Reserve stands as one of Lebanon’s richest and most breathtaking protected forests.
Baatara Gorge Sinkhole: A Majestic Wonder of Tannourine
The Baatara Gorge Sinkhole, also known as Balou’ Balaa, is a breathtaking natural wonder shaped over millions of years. Fed by waters from Laqlouq, Bal’a, and the highlands of Tannourine, its stunning waterfall reaches peak flow in spring, as melting snow cascades through its ancient rock formations.
Perched at an altitude of 1,550 meters, this spectacular sinkhole plunges 255 meters deep, with its waterfall dramatically piercing through three naturally formed rock bridges. Below, tunnels and steep chasms create a thrilling yet treacherous landscape, especially in spring, when water and vegetation are abundant.
As seen in my captures, the site is accessible on foot or via cable car, and I had the chance to livestream my visit last month on Instagram. For adventure seekers, crossing the aerial bridge between two mountains and rock climbing offer even more exhilarating experiences.
