Oyoun Orgoush: Lebanon’s Hidden Alpine Paradise – A Journey Through Nature, Adventure, and Tradition
As the weekend begins, I can’t help but reach out and wish you a delightful time in our breathtaking Lebanon. As promised, today I’m taking you on a journey to Oyoun Orgoush, a hidden gem where pristine landscapes, traditional Lebanese cuisine, and adventure await. Let’s uncover the magic of this highland sanctuary!
Where is Oyoun Orgoush?
Nestled among towering peaks and surrounded by semi-barren terrain, Oyoun Orgoush belongs to the Baalbek District, Bekaa Governorate. It lies at an altitude of 2,200 meters above sea level, right at the foothills of Qornet El Sawda, the highest peak in Lebanon and the Levant. The location acts as a natural link between the Bekaa and North Lebanon and sits just 25 kilometers away from the Cedars of Bcharre.
A Journey Through the Highlands
I personally visited Oyoun Orgoush after exploring the Bcharre region, and the journey itself was mesmerizing. The road offers a panoramic view of Bcharre and the Cedars Forest, followed by an ascent to Qornet El Sawda’s intersection, where a winding path leads down the slopes, revealing golden-hued mountains and breathtaking views of the Bekaa Valley.
A Land of Seasonal Beauty and locals traditions
Oyoun Orgoush’s lands primarily belong to Nabha village, with large portions owned by the Tawk family, who return each spring and summer to enjoy the serene beauty. As I chatted with a warm-spirited woman running one of the local eateries, she shared that due to its extreme winters, the area becomes inaccessible during fall and completely covered in snow by winter, often reaching up to three meters in height.
This area is known for its crystal-clear springs and naturally formed lakes, many of which disappear underground through sinkholes known as “Ghawar.” These water bodies not only enhance the region’s beauty but also serve as vital sources of irrigation and fish farming.
Local inhabitants cultivate a deep connection with the land, raising trout fish in the lakes and livestock in the pastures. The area is home to age-old poplar and juniper trees, some dating back over 500 years, standing alongside thriving cherry and apple orchards. The harmony between man and nature here is truly captivating.
Adventure and Leisure: Things to Do in Oyoun Orgoush
Whether you are an adventurer or a seeker of tranquility, Oyoun Orgoush offers a mix of exciting activities and peaceful retreats:
A scenic drive: Navigate a winding mountain road, revealing breathtaking views of Bcharre and Bekaa along the way.
Off-road adventures: Reach the area on quad bikes (ATVs) for an exhilarating ride.

Cultural encounters: Meet local herders and explore the charming village houses, no more than twenty in number, each exuding traditional Lebanese character.
Lakeside relaxation: Choose a café or restaurant perched by the serene lakes, and quench your thirst with chilled water served in traditional glass or clay jugs, followed by a warm Lebanese coffee before selecting your fresh trout for lunch.
Sunset serenity: As the day winds down, embrace the quietude and the golden hues of the setting sun.
A Moment of Reflection
Aren’t we truly fortunate and proud to call Lebanon our home, a land rich in heritage, authenticity, natural beauty, and seasonal diversity? But a more profound question arises: Are we truly worthy of such a land?
Stay well until we meet again on a new journey, exploring another breathtaking scene of nature and adventure in Lebanon.
